ZNU 137 is released this morning. In this episode, I look at at Mugabe's intention of proceeding to call a government without Morgan Tsvangirai, the pointlessness of continuing the 'mediated' talks, especially under Mbeki - a self-confessed Mugabe supporter and how the democratic world has turned a blind eye to Mugabe's stealing the election and continuing to oppress the Zimbabwean people...

As usual, my thanks for your continued support of this podcast.

I sometimes shake my head at the chosen words that some reporters use. Not so long ago there were article that would say the the MDC is 'up in arms' about something, and straight away the ZANU PF vitriol increased, warming the MDC not to arm themselves.

Today we read that former Zambian President, Kenneth Kaunda, has urged the political rivals in Zimbabwe to bury their differences. Mugabe has been burying the differences in Zimbabwe for years!

"Former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda, one of Africa's senior statesmen and a close friend of President Robert Mugabe, on Sunday urged Zimbabwe's political rivals to bury their differences.

"Mugabe and (Morgan) Tsvangirai need to bury their political differences thinking what is right for the people of
Zimbabwe," said Kaunda, in Mozambique's capital Maputo for Victory Day celebrations.

Talks between Mugabe and Tsvangirai, whose
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) holds a parliamentary majority, became deadlocked in mid-August over Mugabe's desire to retain control of security forces, the opposition says.

Tsvangirai has rejected a power-sharing deal that would have seen security ministries reporting to Mugabe, and economic and social ministries to himself, the MDC leader told South African radio this past week.
"

At the risk of becoming monotone, Mbeki should give up this. The mediated talks have dragged on much too long, and it is apparent, even to the most liberal individual, that they are not working, and that each day they are allowed to drag on is harmful to the people of Zimbabwe.

Morgan Tsvangirai was looking at bolstering his support in a speech during the celebration of the MDC turning 9 years old.

"Zimbabwe
opposition chief Morgan Tsvangirai vowed on Sunday that he would not sign any power-sharing deal with President Robert Mugabe unless the 84-year-old leader agreed to give up executive power.

Tsvangirai - sounding more defiant than ever before - said it was better for his MDC party to pull out of power-sharing talks with the ruling ZANU PF party than accept a deal that would leave the status quo untouched with Mugabe still entitled to his current wide-sweeping powers as head of state and government.

"Mugabe must be head of state and Tsvangirai head of government, without that I will not sign,” Tsvangirai told a rally to celebrate the MDC's ninth anniversary in the city of
Gweru in central Zimbabwe.

Tsvangirai promised not to bow to pressure from talks mediator South African President Thabo Mbeki to sign a draft deal that has been endorsed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) but which the MDC leader has rejected saying it would make him a "ceremonial prime minister" in a government of national unity.
"

Mugabe has reportedly delayed his intentions to name a cabinet while we waits to see if Tsvangirai does sign the agreement. I somehow doubt that he will - and for that, I am grateful.

It is not what Mugabe or even Mbeki wants - it should be what the people want - after all, it was the people that voted in their thousands for Tsvangirai.

"
Under the draft power-sharing deal Mugabe would remain executive president in charge of both state and government while Tsvangirai would be prime minister but without power to hire or fire government ministers. He would also not chair Cabinet meetings. The MDC leader would also be required to report regularly to Mugabe.

Tsvangirai insists he should get the lion’s share in any power-sharing government because he defeated Mugabe in the first round presidential voting on March 29 although he failed to secure the margin required to takeover the presidency.
"

I state once again, that it is not a prerequisite in an election of more than two people for the office of President that one person achieve the 'magical' 50% plus one vote. This would be a target that is almost impossible given the number of candidates in the first round.

When is someone actually going to realise that the Zimbabwean people have been cheated - once again?

"Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said on Sunday his party would rather quit power-sharing talks than sign an unsatisfactory deal and challenged President Robert Mugabe to call a new election.

"We are saying to him you can call another election under international supervision and let's see who is going to win that race," he told a rally to celebrate the ninth anniversary of his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Tsvangirai beat Mugabe in a March 29 election but fell short of enough votes to avoid a June run-off, which was won by Mugabe unopposed after Tsvangirai pulled out, citing violence and intimidation against his supporters.

"We would rather have no deal than a bad deal," Tsvangirai said.
"

Once again, the suggestion that there is a misunderstanding in the interpretation of the election rules. Think about it. For ZANU PF to win any Presidential election, all they have to do is have a number of no-hopers enter the fray, then when the votes are counted, the real candidate can stand up while the good people of Zimbabwe get beaten to a bloody pulp.

"
South African President Thabo Mbeki, mandated by regional countries to mediate in the Zimbabwe talks, was expected to arrive in Harare on Monday. He has come under repeated fire for not being tough enough with Mugabe.

Other southern African leaders have taken a hard line against Mugabe. But he has refused to budge, and the MDC has made it clear it has little faith in Mbeki as a mediator.

"President Mbeki is coming, but don't worry about him. He is not the one who is going to sign the agreement. He is going to have to persuade me to shift my position," Tsvangirai told the rally in the city of
Gweru in central Zimbabwe."

Critics will no doubt rip into Tsvangirai for not signing, and not attending this meeting. But since when does he have to do what Mbeki and ZANU PF want? I thought that Zimbabwe was a democracy?

"Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai failed to attend a preparatory discussion held on Saturday in Mbabane, Swaziland, ahead of the final round of inter-party power-sharing talks scheduled for Monday in Harare.

ZANU PF leader Robert Mugabe in
Mbabane to witness King Mswati’s 40th birthday bash, attended.

MDC officials said Tsvangirai had not attended Saturday’s meeting believing it would only be of a technical nature to appraise the newly sworn-in chair of the SADC troika on Politics, Defence and Security, Mswati III, on the status of the Zimbabwean talks.

MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa said Tsvangirai was unable to attend, adding he had sent his apologies to King Mswati III. He said the party was preparing for a historic celebration of the 9th anniversary of the MDC, which is scheduled for Mkoba Stadium in Gweru Sunday.
"

Now that is what I call getting your priorities right.

And why attend a meeting which is not going to achieve much as all ZANU PF and Mbeki are going to be doing is encouraging Tsvangirai to sign an agreement which may be acceptable to Mugabe, Mbeki and Mutambara, but not to the MDC?

"
On Thursday Tsvangirai, who now appears to be dictating the pace of the talks, refused to sign what the MDC says it regards as a defective power-sharing deal. Mugabe had given the MDC leader up to Thursday to sign the power-sharing agreement; threatening to name a Cabinet if he did not append his signature to the deal that day.

President Thabo Mbeki had been expected in
Harare Thursday to witness the signing but cancelled the trip after Tsvangirai informed him that he would not be available to sign.

The meeting was re-scheduled to Monday.
"

I still do not see Tsvangirai accepting the deal. As he has stated, better to have no deal than a bad deal...

"
Mugabe joined Mswati for the traditional independence celebrations held at Somhlolo Stadium outside the capital Mbabane, where he received a standing ovation on arrival. He reciprocated by raising his familiar clenched fist salute."

A fist that he uses to break the Zimbabwean people's resolve.

Mugabe will tell the world that Canada is attempting to foment regime change, and will claim that Canada is one of the 'hidden hands' that drives the MDC.

"The Federal Government of Canada has imposed further sanctions against the government of
Zimbabwe citing "intimidation and state-sponsored violence".

A report from the Canadian Foreign Ministry said the new sanctions regime was imposed "in order to respond to the gravity of the situation in Zimbabwe". The country also expanded the list of "designated persons" who are not allowed to travel to, or do business in, Canada and banned arms exports, froze the assets of top Zimbabwean officials and banned Zimbabwean aircraft from flying over or landing in Canada.

"Under the Regulations, the Governor in Council may approve and list on a schedule to the Regulations the names of persons for which there are reasonable grounds to believe that they are connected with the Government of Zimbabwe," read part of the document sent to The Zimbabwe Guardian.
"

Then, when you look at the list, it includes deceased people!

But I do understand the need to include them as their family members still have accounts in the name of the dead people and use them to move money out of Zimbabwe.

"
The expanded list includes names of ZANU PF officials’ children and some deceased individuals. It includes the former Minister of Information and Publicity and former permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Dr Tichaona Jokonya who is still listed as a minister. Dr Jokonya died on June 24, 2006. On the same list Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu is also listed as Minister of Information and Publicity.

The spouse of Justice Minister, Patrick Chinamasa, who is listed as Monica Chinamasa is said to have been born in 1905 which makes her 103 years old.
"

Ndlovu lost his seat in the March 29 parliamentary election.

"
The reintroduction of sanctions against Zimbabwe by Canada is another example of Western gesture politics that does very little on the ground. Masking the sanctions as targeted has become almost laughable, especially coming on the backdrop of Western pleas for the lifting of an NGO ban in Zimbabwe. Barely a week after President Mugabe’s government lifted the ban, Canada slams the country with more sanctions."

Take care.
