Foreign currency mid-rates updated...

It isn't very often that there is anything to laugh about when it comes to Zimbabwe, but late yesterday afternoon, I read an article(Robert Mugabe's Bulletproof Dash To Tsvangirai's Hospital Bed) written by Denford Magora with particular interest in the fact that Mugabe might have been wearing a bulletproof vest when he accompanied his wife and Joyce Mujuru to visit Morgan Tsvangirai in hospital after the vehicle accident that killed his wife.

It was the last paragraph that made me howl with delight: "
Grace apparently did not get a bullet-proof vest. Maybe they did not think anyone would want to harm her, they would go for the big fish instead. Or perhaps she just could not find the shoes to go with a bullet-proof vest."

Who says that Zimbabweans don't have a sense of humour?

-o00o-

On a more serious note - and I would LOVE to just have the humour continue, but it isn't going to happen - more and more people are adding their voice to the growing chorus to have Mugabe charged with crimes against humanity in The Hague.

"Robert Mugabe should be hauled before the International Criminal Court (ICC) to explain the "tragic situation" in his country, the Congress of the People (Cope) presidential candidate Mvume Dandala said on Tuesday.

Dandala is former South African President Thabo Mbeki's family friend and his favoured choice for the coming national elections in which he is fight against Zuma.

"There must be ways by which the rest of humanity can ask questions. I believe the ICC is one of those instruments that can be used," Dandala told reporters in Kliptown,
Soweto.

"Given the tragic situation in Zimbabwe I personally feel that if President Mugabe was taken to the international court... he would be given a chance to actually explain himself.
"

In the event that Mugabe is given a chance to "explain himself", he will blame the British and Americans, the whites, the farmers, the MDC, the "puppets of the West" - and would run and hide behind the idea that Zimbabwe is a 'democratic sovereignty'... All of which we know to be incorrect as Zimbabwe is run under a dictator...

"
Zimbabwe is currently in the throes of a political and economic crisis which has caused instability, severe food shortages and thousands of cholera deaths.

More than 91000 cases of cholera have been reported in the country since the disease broke out last August, killing 4035, according to latest World Health Organisation (WHO) data published on Monday.

The WHO said earlier this month that the outbreak was showing signs of slowing, with the number of cases averaging 4000 to 4500 a week compared to peaks of about 8 000 earlier in the outbreak.
"

But Mugabe has already alleged that the disease was started deliberately by the UK and the the USA - after he had been sarcastic' and told the world that the cholera outbreak had been wiped out...

Enough already! Just put him in front of the ICC and let's see how he squirms.

Mugabe's lot in Zimbabwe will not leave this alone, will they? They have alleged that the accident was a deliberate plot to kill Tsvangirai, set up by the West as they were not happy with the MDC joining the inclusive government.

Now they are saying that the CFU was involved - because one of the first people on the scene was a commercial farmer...

"Police in Zimbabwe have arrested Deon Theron, the vice-president of Zimbabwe's predominantly-white Commercial Farmers Union, for taking photographs of the crash scene in which Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's wife died on March 6, union officials said Wednesday.
Theron spent Tuesday night in cells at Harare central police station after being questioned for most of the day over his presence at the accident shortly after it happened, said CFU director Hendrik Olivier.

He was being charged with "defeating the course of justice" by taking pictures in the presence of police of the damaged vehicle and the scene, he said.
"

In Zimbabwe, you are guilty of an offence if you agree with the President (a woman was taken to court because she called Mugabe "Hitler" - after he had described himself as "Hitler - tenfold"), you farm your own land - and now it would appear, taking photographs...

"
CFU vice-president Theron lived on a farm only 10 kilometres from the scene of the accident, which explained why he had arrived there before police, relatives said.

He had been called by officials in the MDC to film and photograph the scene, to provide a record in case of an inquiry. Police arrested him then and confiscated his camera and video recorder but released him after a few hours. His equipment is still held by police.
"

I would have thought that the photographs taken would bear out the defence that they were taken for possible use 'in case of an inquiry'. I will bet that the camera disappears...

If ever there was someone to cling to their own principles, then we need look no further than Robert Mugabe.

Regardless of what other people think - even ration people, that is - when Mugabe throws allegations around and has his loyalists do the dirty work, it is intended to make the biggest impression upon like-minded persons within the community.

This farmer may not have done anything that warrants an assault - but that doesn't stop Mugabe-ites - he is white and a farmer...

"Johannes Nel, a commercial farmer in Gutu, is nursing injuries after he was assaulted and taken hostage for hours by a group of suspected ZANU PF supporters over the weekend.

The incident occurred amid growing concern over fresh farm invasions across the country.

Nel, a large-scale cattle rancher, was on Monday reported to be in hiding.

Officials within Commercial Farmers Union confirmed the attack on the farmer, adding that the ongoing farm invasions went against the current spirit of unity.

According to workers at Nel’s farm, a group of about 100 invaders raided the property and dragged the farmer from his vehicle before taking him hostage for almost six hours.

"They came here numbering about 100 and abducted our employer whom they force-marched into their car and drove off," said one of the workers.
"

This reads something from a WWII story based in a Nazi occupied country.

"
The CFU says Nel was bundled into a ZANU PF truck before being dumped about 80 kilometres away from the farm.

"Farm invasions are continuing daily," CFU president Trevor Gifford said. "They are against the spirit of unity which our political leaders are preaching everyday.
"

ZANU PF hardliners are calling for an accelerated land grab as they believe that once Tsvangirai has taken the reins of power (we hope), the invasions will be stopped.

"
Although Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has called for an unconditional halt to all fresh farm invasions, some suspected ZANU PF supporters appear to be ignoring the message.

A visit to Nel’s farm revealed that about 100 suspected ZANU PF supporters were camped on the land and have literally taken over the farmer’s property.

"You waste your time telling us that you are a journalist," said one man who appeared to be the leader of the invaders. "Join us and you will also get land.
"

Take care.
